| •
Girls Initiate provides girls with a “rite of
passage” weekend where positive qualities such as acceptance,
authentic self-expression, empowerment and leadership are modeled
by adult female staff.
•
The Coming of Age Program is co-created by girls and their families.
Girls can start to look at what it means to be a woman... depicted
everywhere throughout history, culture and how it relates to
them now. This weekend will be an immersion into the exploration
of each girls personal passage needs in a group context with
the support of staff and their mentor-muses.
• After the weekend, for 9 months, each young woman and
her peers are held in a Mentorship-Circle of nurturing and affirming
women; an environment that she may cherish as a place to be
herself.
• Girls are given support and encouragement to find their
voice and to consider their evolving identity and changing body
image. Each girl can explore where she fits in and with whom
she identifies as part of her self-discovery process as an emerging
young woman.

OF EVENTS

Each
girl has a female mentor. Mentors
come from the girls' community. The mentor’s role is to
witness, support and help reinforce healthy behaviors. The mentor’s
purpose is to listen, accept, and encourage. All staff and mentors
must complete mandatory 24 hours of training prior to their
participation in the program. All staff and mentors must undergo
an FBI / Police background check before working with youth.
Mentors receive ongoing training and support and commit to participate
throughout the year (this is not a calendar year).

Cost:
The participation "year"
includes: First 4 stages of initiating
the Circle; the Passage Weekend; Homecoming Celebration; 9 months
of mentorship; relationship & community skills training; and
a final community / family event----The total cost sliding scale
is $650 - $800 a year if paid in advance or $770 - $905 if paid
monthly (for a cost of $80 - $95 a month for 9 months plus $50
non-refundable registration fee.) If a girl comes on board at
the last moment, in July for an August Passage weekend, let's
say, and the family chooses the monthly payment plan, they will
need to pay $450 - $525 before the August event which includes
the registration fee and 5 months' payment. If a girl
decides to do the Wilderness Passage year, there is an additional
charge for a summer 5 day Wilderness immersion challenge in the
summer following her Sept. - May mentorship. That cost
is usually $450 - $550.
We keep costs very reasonable considering
the rich and multi-modal programming we offer. The sliding scale
cost can hopefully make it affordable for most. As we begin to
receive funding, Scholarship and Sponsorship may also be available.
