Vermont’s Premiere of “Girls Rock!”
, a film about a girls’ empowerment music camp, showcasing local Girls Initiate programs, Amherst Cinema, 28 Amity St., Amherst, MA Friday May 16, 7pm

Watch the Girls Rock! trailer.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls is a place where 8-18 year olds come from all over the country to learn Rock DIY-style--forming bands, writing songs and building community, and “Girls Rock!” is the movie about their journey. The primary subjects of “Girls Rock!” are Laura, an articulate adopted Korean obsessed with death metal; Misty, who is emerging from a life of meth-addiction, homelessness and gang activity; Palace, a sweet-seeming 8-year-old with a heavy metal sneer, and Amelia, who’s writing a 14-song cycle about her dog Pippi. Forming bands, writing song sand playing a gig in one week, these girls and the rest of the camp engage in an experiment in empowerment that will leave no-one unchanged.

After the film, Girls Initiate program information will be available: Friends Rock! Circles Rock! Love Rocks! Coming of Age Passage & Mentorship, and Girls Express Camp. These programs work with girls in creative and fun ways to address the same core issues about girls’ development and empowerment: Finding their voice; Belonging without sacrificing who they are; Self-acceptance and making choices that support personal goals.

“Tearjerker and rockumentary ... you’ll need a hanky and your Joan Jett lighter when watching “Girls Rock!”... the film paints an inspiring portrait of how camp uses musicianship to help girls bond, build self-esteem and rock out.” - Bust Magazine

Friends, Visionaries, Families, Collaborators...
We have had an exciting few weeks for our youth empowerment and rites of passage mentorship information sharing and inspiration building... It is a fruitful beginning to our mission to Co-create World Peace from the Inside Out: Inside YOUth; In RELATionships; Within CommUNITY

Last month's "Journeyman" Film Premieres in CT & VT, with co-producer Dr. Michael Obsatz in CT and presenter on rites of passage Mark Morey in VT, created some wonderful energy. We had a turnout of about 60 - 70 people at both events with 14 men stepping forward to mentor and lead, several connections made with local mentoring orgs to collaborate as well as dialogues opened up to offer this kind of developmental and cultural passage experience to serve the needs of our youth and community. DVD'S are available if you missed the premieres.

A Boys To Men Mentoring Network "Intensive Training in Leadership" for men and women, is scheduled for Saturday, April 26th in Brattleboro. We will have leaders and "journeymen" coming from all over New England and Canada to lead this important training and invitation to be a part of this meaningful and heart-full work. All are welcome. Suggested donation is $50, though nobody will be turned away due to lack of funds.
Registration necessary. dbolduc@kcc.com

We had a great turnout of about 70 people for Girls Rock! Film Premiere in VT, April 10, showcasing Girls Initiate programs. We made lots of connections with girls, mothers and women who are interested in co-creating these programs. Iishana Artra, Wendy Webber, Luz Elena Morey, Miriam Dror and Robin Zege were present as part of our Collective team; Selena Gallen was not available because she was leading a women's circle and Michelle Apland could not be present, but hopes to be at the Amherst event.

Our first Girls Circle "Friends Rock!" begins in a few weeks with Jeanne-Marie, Wendy Webber and Robin Zege. It looks like 2 after school Circles are shaping up; a Thursday circle and another one for youth with special needs (hopefully on Mondays "Friends Rock Together!", part of the Together Mentoring that's taking shape in Brattleboro). These pilot programs will run for 4 weeks. Please contact us with a referral for a girl soon (or for boys or girls for the Together program).

Saturday, May 3, we have a FUN-draising DAY, ages 9 & up, with Jeanne-Marie, Luz Elena Morey, Robin Zege, Elizabeth Brood... suggested donation $20 - $50, where we will have a "sampler" of our program activities: Goddess Dance, Hooping Circles, Coyote Dream, Sing & Shout, Sword Choreography, Mysteries Theatre, Mandala Art, Bardic Circle (story), Adventure Heart...

Reclaim Your Teenage Elements (RYTE) Training for women: opportunity to reclaim some of what we lost or forgot or gave away as we left our childhood behind and moved through our thundering teen years. We can then transform our learning into empathy and teaching tools for ourselves and others. This training is for all women and especially those contemplating a Mentor-Muse role with Girls Initiate. June 14 & 15, $100. Ask us about financial aid or barter reductions.

Girls Express Arts Camp August 18-21 Ages 11 & up
Immersion in the arts... we will also just enjoy the sun and time to play down by the river.

Girls Initiate Passage Weekends
August 22 - 24 • Coming of Age Passage Circle begins
Sept. 5 - 7 • Coming of Age Wilderness Passage begins

We have 2 Passage-Circles in the making for an August 2008 Passage Weekend and September 2008. Mothers and other family members are meeting with facilitators to start the process. The next step will be planning events and finding mentors.

We still need more girls, mentors, staff and support people.
